rb25 rebuild by richy/antonymcgraph

first the reason for this thread -
i have read many things on this site that has very much helped me with lots of things with my car so when i decided to do this i though it would be good to give something back and help and maybe inspire people to do things on there cars themselves insted of paying people to do it for them.

Please i am not a machanic by trade so if you see anything that i have done wrong or could do better or even just a bit of support please feel free, i must add i am doing this as a bit of a long term thing as i dont have a load of money to buy all the parts in one go so i will update a bit at a time

I have had problems with my car for some time now, it has kept pushing oil out of the breathers when driven hard and over tme it has got worse untill one day it just had enough and spat over 1 ltr of oil out of the catch tank all over my tires at 145 mph not good

so thought about my options and decided i would rebuild it myself (well with a bit of help from a couple of friends) reasons for doing it myself

1 - i have always wated to do something like this
2 - i can not afford to pay somebody
3 - the amount people wanted for doing it was unreal
4 - i want to stand back and look at my car when its done and say i rebuilt that as this i think is far better than just handing over a big lump of cash

i have a decent level of mechanical skills but i am not a mechanic, most work i do is on bikes but what the hell i thought i would give it ago

sorry for picture quality

Fist my car -

the damage -

everything else on the engine is spot on all the other pistons the bearings the crank all look brand new, but there you go it only takes a couplr of tiny bits to brake and the hole thing comes apart

i am planning on putting wiseco pistons in and maybe ACL headgasket and bearig,if anybody has any ideas help or advice it would be very much appreciated.

Cheers Richy

good choice in head gasket and bearings,,,,, get standard ACL bearings for the mains part no. 7M2394H these will be forgiving towards clearances for the first time builder but yet will still take the punishment you dish out.... and the 1 thou under ACL race series bearings for the big ends part no. 6B2960HX these have a extra thou oil clearance to help with high reving and load applications and also will help give peice of mind that you will have ample clearance for the first time builder..... unless you feel confident to measure everything up........

clean everything very well, then clean it again to be sure... skim head and block to make sure their flat.... take your time when putting back together... and a handy hint for the first time engine builder... once you torque up head studs, main bolts, big ends and such mark them with a tipex pen so your sure you dont miss any and it gives you peice of mind that you havnt missed anything....

torque settings,,,do a search on here for the engine manual down load,,, if you cant find it let me know i will find it head bolts eeeeer well if you feel the need, yes they are a good ( expensive ) peice of mind, but not really needed unless your going to be running stupid power and boost,,, i ran 1.7 bar on my old engine with standard head bolts with no probs....upto you mate.... head gasket part no. HG2025GTR .. when your cleaning up the block and head surfaces to put head gasket on.... use thinners and a lint free cloth ( T-SHIRT ) clean both surfaces with thinners very well ( BOLT HOLES ASWELL) let dry,,, then spray with window cleaner and wipe with clean cloth,, this will get rid of any left over oil and such,,, when handling the head and gasket, dont put your fingers on the sealing surfaces, the oil in your skin doesnt help!!! good luck...any questions dont hesitate to ask

Im new to RB engine's so I may be wrong so bear with me please. On the SR20 engine when reusing the OEM head bolts you have to measure them to check they have not over stretched. Are the RB's the same ? may be worth replacing the head bolts with new OEM ones for a little insurance if you dont want to fork out for aftermarket ones..

oil ( carbon ) contamination around the ring lands cause detonation over time heats them up till they break off.........

ive never had a streched rb head bolt in my time,,,, you can buy new ones if you wish,,, all comes down to how much cash you want to spend,,, i dont think you need new ones, ive built a hell of alot of rb engines with old head bolts and never had a problem before.....
