e46 m3...... any advice

So due to family commitments my sbody is.up for sale
I've had nissan now for yrs and really fancy a change.
So I have approx budget of 6000/6.5k
Looking at the e46 m3

Just want some experience and advice tbh,
What are they like? Weekend car only again tbh but will they make me.smile like the rb25 did?

Also any other suggestions on cars that will be family friendly but sporty coupe also?

I keep getting.mixed feelings about the whole ordeal, do I don't I sell but I really think a change will do me good.
Just not sure what to get...

Help me please

It's only going to be used weekends mainly however othe odd outing in the week too.
Really like the looks of the e46 all be it a little common though, just not sure.if I am making the correct decision
The m3 looks and sounds rather nice, great spec inside and.out, 340 hp out the box, but is it going to do what the rb has done for me but in more civilised way lol

The harsh factor is, my family life and work.life is soo busy I just don't.have the time to play with cars atm and am wanting something I can just jump in and enjoy with the family also.

Your 330 looks.well though Keith,
Have you any advice for the e46 in general and have you ever driven the m3 at all?

the E46 are fantastic to drive mate, although a little bumpy, but you feel safe and connected with it, i think the skylines are far quicker but not as well built or feel as safe, although they are more exciting and noticable to others, mine is as quick as a m3 to around 100mph and then the M3 is a little quicker after that, but from the start the grunt is impressive mate

Would you say it's a good compromise to a sky? Just want something new and little more up to date with the mod cons such as sat nav, etc etc, also looking at smg box?
Any advice on these

Hi buddy
Ive had my M3 for about 7 years, never missed a beat,
Mines a Manual and tbh these days not use it as much as i should
Only issue i ever had was the dvd player on the sat nav pack up, they all do, 270
and rear shock top mount rubbers 80 supplied and fitted, i drive to and thro Spain usually with it through Europe, doesnt miss a beat.

I wish i had of saved up and bought the CSL as you are very limited as to what you can do on tunning these witout spending 2000 minimum
That will probably get you a CSL airbox for a small gain

If your local to me im more than happy for you to take for a spin
Interiors are very Sturdy

Petrol cons is it worse enemy

Shame you need a family car
my Boxter S is up for sale

I've heard they're prone to subframe problems.

Was just going to mention that, not sure if it's the same with convertibles, but I've read some coupes really suffered with subframe coming away from chassis!

I know tuning is expensive, but how do you compare power and delivery to that of the rb?

Anyone have any reviews on the smg box?
Shame your not closer scatrat, would be nice to have a look around it

Well your welcome anytime
Bud and wish you well with your purchase,
Never heard of any subframe issues with them tbh,
I drive BMWs 530D and 330D all day for a living,

If i was to to it all again i would have bought a 335D
So much power in them ones i drive carry half a tonne in equipment and i still have no trouble catching up with anyone in a STI etc to have a chat about how fast their car is

A quick look on Google comes up with several threads about how their subframes are prone to splitting or ripping themselves from the chassis. Seems to be 99-00 models that are the worst for it.

I've had a few M3's in the past too. I think the E46M3 is one of the best all round cars about. I would always stick with the manual rather than the SMG. Boot floor ripping away is a problem but many cars have been repaired by BMW and there's plenty of people on the after market who can also sort this.

They ride better on the 18's than the 19's. The coupe is the better drive. Weirdly I thought the fuel economy was actually pretty good for the sort of car it is- better than a Skyline. On a long motorway run you can get 400 out of a tank.

Genuinely great cars

Mine is a 2002 so not sure of older models
I know the Chain tensioner rattles on them and the VAMOS needs re setting

Ill happily meet you halfway mate not an issue
PS im not selling her 8-)

the torque on the 330d 335D imho is much more torque especially when chipped
And better mpg

Usual things we have changed on our 530d 330d fleet is the High pressure fuel pump at 1200 a pop re con
