R33 GTS-4 Suspension

Hi all,

I've been completely vacant on this forum recently. After finding my rear arches had rusted through I lost some of my love for the Skyline. However they are on their way to being sorted now and the love is returning

My front shocks will need replacing pretty soon and I'm looking at taking the opportunity to upgrade to coil overs, or at least upgraded shocks.

However, its a GTS-4 and I know finding a suspension "set" is a little tricky. As far as I'm aware it needs R33 GTR front shocks and R33 GTS-T rear shocks.

I think (although I may be wrong!) the reason for requiring GTR shocks on the front is they are slightly shorted than GTS-T ones due to drive shafts etc but the mounting is the same?

My question to anyone who has a GTS-4 with upgraded shocks is, would height adjustable GTS-T front shocks be suitable? I figure if it is only a height issue, then adjustable GTS-T front shocks, adjusted appropriately should be OK?

Or am I completely missing the point and even with height adjustable coilovers I'll need the GTR fronts? Perhaps I should post this in the main Suspension thread?

to answer this, yes you are correct the "fitment" onthe front a gts4 is the same as the gts. in that its an eye and bolt arangement. (but only the fitment is the same the oem shocks are quite different)

however when speer33per and i swapped his gts front coilys for my shocks and springs, the adjustments onthe coilys would alow then to work, but it was poosible to set em up wrong and have the drive shafts at the wrong angle.

so to be absolutely sure id go with gtr coilys on the front. and the gts rears.

you are also correct the gtr gts4 shock and spring is somewhat shorter than the gts...mainly the portion below the lower spring mount.

You dont specifically need GTR suspension, just 4wd suspension. 2wd suspension will not fit in the rear, period. (by that I mean the 25-t suspension you mentioned)
I believe the GTR/GTS4 suspension is lower in the front and also has a different spring rate compared to the 2wd, possibly due to the extra weight. However the fronts are interchangable between 2wd / 4wd

if your talking about the r33 model then youre wrong sorry. i have a gts4 r33. and have switched out the rear suspension. the rear subframe on a r33 gts4 saloon is identical to that of a 2wd coupe so the 2 and 4 wd rear units are interchangeable.

The 4wd suspension you mention? which one do you mean? if its the gtr type then the gtr Rears will not fit, ass the lower mount is a fork type fitment, where as the gts 4 and gts (both turbo and none) are an eyelet at the bottom with a bolt through it.

therefore to sum up, the front of a gts 4 is gtr fitment, and the rear is gts(t) there is no difference inthe rear suspension of coupe and saloon, and if you soo wish you could fit a gts set of coilovers to a gts4 but obviously the front units would have to be carefully adjusted.

for my part i would put gtr coilover units on the front, as the extra damping etc would come in handy lugging the front diffs and allthat extra front end weight.

No sh|t?! I know the R32 is different in the rear between 2wd and 4wd and I was under the impression the R33 was the same. I always thought the GTS4 (R33) had the fork at the bottom of the strut like the GTR.

tis not a problem, i admit i am not 100% on the r32, having never owned or been underneath one. but the r33, i've had three, one gts coupe one gts saloon and one gts4 saloon...all same at the back ..odd innt?

you aint the first to be caught out onthe rear suspension, many paying a price cos they bought the wrong stuff..

try buying a stagea mate.. theyre even worse lol ..

Guys, thanks for the replies and info!

Ask a silly question but am I right in thinking that with the car jacked up and the wheel removed, the relevant shock is bottomed out or are there other parts of the suspension that bottom out first?

Some background to this is that my car is really quite high at the front. A suggestion is that it has been used for towing in its life but I see no evidence of this so I wanted to check the shocks were right. Jacked up full front shock length is give or take 500mm which sounds right from measurements of GTR (500mm) and GTS-T (565mm ish) front shocks I've been given, as long as it is bottomed out.

Paranoia I'm sure but was something I wanted cleared up because of all the general confusion surrounding the correct shocks.

Looks like I'll be asking around to see who can do some sort of GTR font, GTS-T rear coilover option that doesn't involve buying full sets of both. Though Hesh, you say its quite easy to get the front shafts at the wrong angle - is this more so the case with GTS-T coilovers fitted to the GTS-4 front or just hight adjustable coilovers in general (probably my lack of correct coilover setup understanding gleaming through!)?

it was as you say when speedr33per and i fitted the gtst coil overs tothe gts4. the gtst (rwd) type coilovers had soo much adjustment it was possible to get the car sitting in such a position where the defining part of the ride height was the front drive shafts. "sitting on the drive shafts " in a sense. which would have meant premature wear of the diff and such ..

so as long as you fit front gtr type suspension wether that be dampers and springs or coilovers you should be fine.

and yes the gts4 does sit considerably higher than the gts(t) rwd as standard

Hesh that's some very interesting information, thanks for that! I never knew the GTS-4 ride height as standard was higher than the GTS(T) so now I do I can stop worrying.

First things I recon then are adjustable camber arms etc to cope with the lowering - it sounds like even standard GTR dampers+springs will lower it a bit from standard. I did notice GTR springs looked to have 6 coils compared to the 8 on mine which accounts for the extra ride height perhaps.

Hey guys sorry to bring up a 5 year dead thread, but I'm about to buy a GTS4 coupe to replace my burnt GTS25 coupe and from what I can tell, the rear suspension is the same as the RWD car, but it has the same front suspension as the GTR? Say I were to put in adjustable arms, just buy GTR parts for the front and GTST parts for the rear? Cheers
