350Z compared to R33 GTS-T

21814 Views 20 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  g35brit
Seriously thinking about buying a 350Z as my R33 is now 14 years old and I can’t justify spending any more money on a car this old.

Was wondering how the 2 cars compare from a drivers perspective and what tuning options are available for the Z? Also, is it better to buy a UK spec Z over an import?

Any comments from Z owners who have owned Skylines appreciated!

Cheers

Steve

probably best to go on the 350z forum and compare what people say about the 350 to your experience with your r33. i have driven an 350 a couple of times now and love them but a can't afford one so i'm sticking to my r32 lol
Have a word with Blitzskyline on here. He runs a r33 gtst as well as a 350gt. was going to change the 33 for a 350Z so prob has a lot to say about comparison. good luck mate.
you actually cannot compare , totally different cars

Z is flat torque , but still a fast car , you will find it prob a bit boring after driving a R33 no wooshes , pops and bangs and the tug of a turbo, and no real street cred doesnt have "skyline" written on the back , just another zed , the GT is a skyline

the zed like the GT is all about torque , delivers it all with no fuss , the manual GT pulls like a train from 20mph in 6th

In my 300 odd bhp GTS off the mark i can beat the manual GT until about 40mph , then sally just sits one handed on her sterring wheel listening to her tunes effortlessly shifting up the box and shes back there with me and i cant shake her off even at 80mph , side by side shes there with me , while i'm lighting up tyres and making lots of fuss .. Auto with mods out drags a std R33GTR to 100 ( hAPPY v35 GT to 100 is stupid )

Import Zed you rarely get leather or bembros , other than that identical car to UK spec .. except square rear number plate , not sure you get zenons on the import either , but you will gain low miles and mint bodywork, will need stero change as well

just remember to get your years right after 54 plates car tax is £405.00 , hence why older zeds are commandng silly money , personally if you are going to change i'd get a 350GT all day long

if fresh import , remeber you only pay £185.00 TAX if it has a IVA

I had my 350gt up for sale as I was looking at a 350z having previously owned one before, After driving a couple of different Zs I decided to keep my 350gt, it really is the more complete car.

Ive had r32s and an r33 before, very different cars to the z or the 350gt (which share the same engine and I still feel for a N/A engine is very underrated) however Im sure youll be happy with whatever choice you make

As Blitz mentioned watch out for the tax

Intresting discussion lads as i too have had the thought the R33 is this old (16 yrs) and spending money on it is abit of a waste bla bla bla etc...

The 350z looks that bit more cleaner/tidyer. The 350GT also has rear seats doesn't it- if thats the one badged skyline.... So abit more practicle than a Z'd.

I've thought about putting the RB lump into a 350Z seen as i've now got a decent amount of power out of it:naughty: Obviously depending on cost, it may be cheaper than supercharging or twin turbo'ing the 3.5 V6. You'd still get your woosh, pop, bangs too:bigthumb:

Would it still qualify for the £190 a year tax seen as the engine it's self is older than the car??
When they first came out all I ever wanted was the 350z, i saw one over in the USA and they looked even better than the pics, but then i saw the boot space,or didnt see the boot space, great car but hardly enough space for a weekend away !!!
Then i saw the infinity G35 over there, the car i had to have but no imports over here at the time unless left hand drive !!!
When the skyline 350 hit good old england I was on the hunt ,it took me nearly a year to find the right one but it was worth it !!!!
I love it to bits !!!!
I would love a 350GT. That car oozes more appeal to me than a 350Z.
nobody rate the 370z then?
Having seen one and had a good look round it, i was very dissappointed by the overal shape but really by the interior. Fit and finish was terrible!!!
Well thread started mentioned 350Z but hell yea the 370Z is pure sex! Love the trick transmission.
I have had my 350Z (UK, non Bose) since new (2004) and for those who say it's got no boot space, as long as you don't have kids or dogs to contend with, I've done 3 european holidays with the wife for 3 weeks each with no issues, plenty space.

If you need the extra 2 seats obviosuly the Z doesn't even come into the equation.

I like the G35 :)P) but it's slower than the Z standard and the looks are definitely worse with the rare exception of a well kitted out G35 like Tom's...

As for not having any street cred... blitz let me know what you are smoking!
the true successor of the R34 is the R35 not the V/G35 ;)

As for the 370Z, I drove them on track as well as on the road. It's great car, but aesthetically imo it's a step back from the Z33 unless you spend huge amounts on a proper bodykit (Zele, Amuse). Interior is much better then the Z33. On track, I still prefer my own (when it was still NA) Z33.

obviously the 350gt has the better boot space but i havn't tried getting a case in the zeds boot . Can you get one in ??

the seating is obvious and the 350gt is a better family car.

The zed puts out 2.5 hp more than the gt due to the gt's quieter intake system but the gt is 100kg heavier. So on paper the zed is quicker but i've seen loads go down santa pod and both cars do around 14.2 ish. it could be down to the weight of the driver who wins :uhoh:

The looks is a pointless argument as everyone has different opinions. For what its worth i think the front view of the zed wins hands down but prefer the side and rear view of the gt. I wish we had the awesome flared rear arches of the zed though.

The zed has plenty of cred and there are a load a realy nice ones around and am sure there are more to come.
The age old isn't it or is it a skyline will go on forever . the fact that Nissan stuck the skyline badge on it was enough for me to join this forum as i class myself as a skyline owner, i never went out and bought a badge and stuck it on myself.
I agree most will class the R35 as a skyline but i would say it was more the next in line to the R34 GTR because of the four wheel drive etc.
Im sure everyone understands the G35 tag by now so i wont explain :)

I think the zeds interior is ok. remember it is in Nissans sports car catagory.

As a foot note i think both are great cars and share 80% of components. Im just glad Nissan are still bringing out these cars where others have fallen into the eco pitt.

I have a hard plastic (air travel type) suitcase that fits under the Zed's strut brace nicely, then you can use smaller bags/suitcases to supplement the requirements, but it's doable LOL

The R35 is "not a skyline" ... not branded or even marketed wish people would understand that its a Nissan GTR and branded as such , just like Nissan make a 350z again which is it owns model

350GT and 370GT is the OFFICAL REPLACEMENT to the R34 and wears skyline badge ,

when i said no strreet cred i mean as in loads of zeds about whether it be UK or jap ,the GT is still very exclusive and a rare sight on UK roads

dont get me wrong i like the Zed i nearly chopped my 33 in for one 3 mths ago , just the zed is bland in stock form and build quality is a million miles away from the GT interior wise ,

My plan was to get the Zed and mod it so it didnt blend in the car park , the GT stock or modified always draws attention as any owner wil tell you , The GT is a plain jane as standard but mod them and wow they look immense and you still get seats a boot and that badge

I spent alot of time last year on the 350z stand at JTS last year getting ideas for the 350z i was planning on buying and modding , but reflecting on it i was actually more drawn to buy a second GT ....

we have had a good look round a few at meets and shows ,

it has a boot now though ,

just so cheap and tacky inside and looks like someone has squashed the back , however if you look straight on at the rear it does share the 350z classic look ,

the car looks failry ok until you look at the rear from the doors back wards

TBH for me 350z is much prettier car ( when modded abit )

Its not a skyline but its the true successor to the r34 hence the r35 name, they just dropped the skyline name to evovle the marque and its image.

oh yeah definatley , just the 350 / 370GT is the successor with the badge and marque , thats what i'm getting at ,

The GTR is a car in its own right , makes you laugh when people say the GT isnt a skyline because it doesnt have a RB ... erm neither does the GTR Its VQ these days incicdently devloped form the VQ we use

Its all just progression at end of the day, All the cars are different , i love my R33 but the GT is another take on the brand and i love that car equally

Here is food for thought

Nissan should have just carried on with the skyline name , its odd why they called it the R35 but not skyline as the "R" was always relevent because of the RB Engine ,

The correct name for the 350GT is a V35 the "V" being for the new breed VQ Engines so this makes its relevent ,

so with the R35 what does the R stand for ???

Same with the infinit brand ,rather than a G37 we should have got what Japan has the Skyline V37 370GT , would have sold here then in numbers, insead we get a US brand name that no ones knows about trying to be Nissan Lexus , hugley overpriced too

The way i look at it is that Nissan arn't fools and they know what they are doing, whatever it may be and for whatever reason.

The Skyline name has been around for many moons now and like all other makes and models it has a sell by date and i gues Nissan thinks it is now.

What i don't understand is they are using the Infiniti brand here (if and when it ever gets released) which i can understand when they see how the brand has taken off in the U.S, but if they are dropping the Skyline brand why call the JDM version a skyline 370gt then ? why not call the JDM cars Infiniti G37.

I still can't see them selling the Infiniti here, not with a big V6 engine and a £400 + road tax. If we get it it will probably be a 2 litre hybrid version

Anyhow i hope it stays as JDM import only so they stay kinda rare

Loads of G37 for sale at the infiniti dealership in Reading , they are on Autotrader , some have upto 1000 miles on , still priced between £35 - 40k , they have a few convertibles as well .. i see Autotrader have added infiniti yet still not added 350GT in the model specs search list , to find a GT you have to trawl the high priced skyline adds ... annoying to say the least
