prob dropped a belt
there is a procedure that will give you a code on the power button by a series of flashes
here you go

Enter the auto transmission diagnostics mode
1. Have the car at normal temperature in Park with the overdrive on
2. Start the engine * the power light will go out after 2 seconds
3. Turn the ignition off
4. Move the selector to Drive (you may have to use the push button release)
5. Overdrive off Wait 2 seconds, and turn the ignition on
6. Wait 2 seconds and move the selector to 2
7. Overdrive on
8. Move the selector to 1
9. Overdrive Off
10. Press the accelerator fully and release
11. Read the auto transmission diagnostics codes.
All codes are flashed with the Power Light on the dashboard (R32) and on the auto mode selection button on the R33's.
The sequence starts with one long flash.
If everything is OK, this will be followed by ten short flashes. Errors are indicated by a long flash in the sequence of short flashes.
° 1st flash longer Revolution sensor shorted or disconnected
° 2nd flash longer Speed sensor shorted or disconnected
° 3rd flash longer Throttle sensor shorted or disconnected
° 4th flash longer Shift solenoid A shorted or disconnected
° 5th flash longer Shift solenoid B shorted or disconnected
° 6th flash longer Overrun clutch solenoid shorted or disconnected
° 7th flash longer Lockup solenoid shorted or disconnected
° 8th flash longer Fluid temperature sensor is disconnected or the control unit power source is damaged
° 9th flash longer Engine revolution sensor shorted or disconnected
° 10th flash longer Line pressure solenoid shorted or disconnected
° All flashes the same with no long start flash Battery voltage low, has been recently disconnected or control unit has just been reconnected

^ its a tiptronic r34gtt if it has an overdrive button I never knew about it..

i read elsewhere the first thing to do is take the speed mph converter/limiter cut device off because that might cause it... my speedo is temperamental at best.

any ideas? just happened out the blue unprovoked...
sorry you didnt say it was a 34 tip so i just asumed it was a 32 or 33 so that info is no good to you
Hi matey

I had in a past the same issue, changed the gear oil - seems to be fine now. Please keep us posted ;)
where is the ecu supposed to be? that ought to tell me the error code....

its supposed to have an oil cooler for the gearbox and its not leaking any oil. wouldnt expect such a sudden overnight refusal to go in first or second just from oil due a change. Makes me think it is electrical.

I started it up again to put it away and again, no A/T warning light. Put it in to tiptronic and it went in to 1st for me, went forward a yard fine in first, great, put it in to drive and it went back to third and then wouldnt go back in to 2nd or 1st in tiptronic mode, or pull away properly in drive (which was using 3rd gear only). So it cant be completely fubared because it did physically go in to first for a brief moment. Is it electrical gremlins then? Second can be used via the hill crawl position. Tried the buttons on the wheel which will change between 3rd and 4th as with the "tip-stick". But no second or first :(
My auto box from my 34 is coming out any day now so if yours is shagged no worries :)

gear oil = transmission fluid (I'm in a Christmas mood lol :screwy:)
thanks for input so far guys. hoping it will cure itself, if not i'll be checking the ecu for error codes. then try removing the dodgy km/h-mph converter in case that is causing a bad speed signal. If the ecu has no faults and removing the converter has no effect then the oil will get changed. I'm just looking at this list and thinking how much wonga each differnt fault codes represents.

112 - Automatic Transmission Speed Sensor
113 - Automatic Transmission 1st Signal
114 - Automatic Transmission 2nd Signal
115 - Automatic Transmission 3rd Signal
116 - Automatic Transmission 4th Signal
118 - Automatic Transmission Shift Solenoid Valve A
121 - Automatic Transmission Shift Solenoid Valve B
123 - Automatic Transmission Overrun Clutch Solenoid Valve
124 - Automatic Transmission TOR Conv Solenoid Valve
125 - Automatic Transmission Line Pressure Solenoid
126 - Automatic Transmission Throttle Position Sensor
127 - Automatic Transmission Engine Speed Signal
128 - Automatic Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor

As before, can anyone point me to the ecu in this puppy? Only found a fuse box in the driver footwell...

It may be dumb question but if I remove power from the battery to reset the ecu, is the "tuning" lost from the avcr and so on?

firstly, your avcr is non volatile, so if you disconnect power, then it should retain all the settings...

With regard to your A/T light, have you run the diagnostic test?? 99% it will give you a fault 'flash' on either Solanoid A or B. It is a common problem. You should be able to turn the car off, and then on again, and it should be back to normal.

I have got a r34 gtt tip and mine does it occasionally... It will get worse over time, and then you will have to have the shift solanoids replaced, which you are looking at a 300-400 job all in. A friend of mine though, has had this problem for over 2 years and his is still going strong....

good luck

p.s. if you havent run the self diagnostic, then its a must!!
how do i do this self diagnostic, is the ecu in the boot?

Hi matey

i've found this, hope it useful:

well i did nothing about this for a week, the alarm flattened the battery. Disconnected it, charged it overnight and away we go, all gears now engaging again, no sign of any problems! :D

Nice one!! It seems like she made a X-mas present for ya! ;)
Hi guys,
I have a 1998 auto R34 Skyline and I have the same problem. It starts in 3rd gear, it came out of nowhere. My car is on 73,000kms bought direct from Japan never been thrashed. Have an auto Electrcian who is scratching his head.No one in Perth Australia knows what to do about it. I was told it must be the solenoid and the auto trans oil is perfect no sign of contamination. It drives well but sluggish starting off.
