Coolant frozen

Hey guys.

Went out this morning to start the car for work and have issues.

Car started on the buttom as always but then i had screeching which isn't really an issue but then this was follwed by lots and lots of smoke coming from the arches and grill.
Needless to say i turned the car off and popped the bonnet.
I had smoke around the air filter, coilpacks, etc but i'm assuming that was just the smoke that couldn't get out from under the bonnet.
Found a shrivelled up and burnt looking snapped alternator belt and my coolant pipes are frozen.
Now worried that if the coolant in the block is frozen then the water pump is going to be frozen solid and need to somehow thaw the frozen coolant without doing damage.

Any idea's

Yes i'm a numpty and didn't add extra coolant :shakehead:

Bugger, there's nothing you can really do bud, but wait for it to de thaw, put a new belt on her and hope for the best.
Man that sucks, can't get to work to do overtime and therefore can't afford to do more car stuff next month.
This snow and general coldness has really ****ed up my xmas and new year.

may run an extension lead out and try speed the thawing process with my chicks hair dryer
on a related cold weather note. the build up of snow in the wheel arches that hasnt thawed, but has turned to solid ice, managed to push my rear tyre off the inside rim yesterday.

i am off to add coollant just now. this is a proper winter.
f**k man thats extreme.it popped yout tyre of the inside of the rim?

Proper winter indeed

i took my car out wednesday evening to get it up to temp and clear the cobwebs out which is why i'm so baffled about it all freezing up. it survived the mega snow only to get messed up by a bit of cold.

****!
heres the bad news, my mates bmw did the exact same trick yesterday, we fed it intrevenus boiling/hot water and let the engine idle a couple of minutes (minus the new belt obviously) and it pissed water outof several core plugs and, we believe a healthy crack in the block

hope yours isnt the same dude, recommend some blankets or old carpet over the bonnet, looks rough, but stops the freeze!!
tyre and wheel refitted. check your wheel wells people...mine were full to the turret tops. rubber mallet and big screw driver to chisel it out.
Don't try and speed up the thaw to much, the sudden change of temp will crack the block, think of your engine as glass now and you know what happens there with sudden temp changes.

contract/expand, crack!
guess i'll be leaving the car to thaw out on its own then. Was thinking about running an extension lead out and putting a portable radiator under the car to warm the air a little and speed up (marginally) the thawing.

That doesn't sound to bad bud.
Jeez some of the stuff I´m readin on this site with car trouble thru this uk snow storm is incredible. I stuck mine in me dads garage a coupla days before the missus an me headed to barcelona for the new year... we were meant to return on thurs just gone, and we´re still here from delays till this coming tuesday and possibly another week later with the way things are.
to make it worse its snowing heavily around spain now too and barca airport is limiting flights too as they´re struggling somewhat. really frightening
to make matters more worse I may come back to find my car sans tub and rims if IansR33 gets home before I do! :p

Fortunately the car itself is still starting ok and running fine ..amazing what a roof over a cars head does!

sorry about subject change there... as others say let it thaw, dont attempt to start or run from frozen! hire a car for a coupla weeks.. it´ll be cheaper than rebuild lol!
push the car into an unheated shed(with a drip tray underneath) and buy some coolent and a fan belt,in the mean time pray to your god or perhaps a few different gods
I'm now [email protected] myself about mine; slight rad leak means anti-freeze level is anyone's guess in my coolant.

Hope it'll be okay (not going anywhere in it at the moment though; my road's snowed in, and I had enough 'fun' in the last lot of snow.
then let the water out from the block also and the heater rad,or you may be next, though if it were gona freeze it probably would have by now!
Give me a shout if you need a hand cole, hows your shortshifter now :) ? Shouldnt take long to thaw out with a source of heat underneath!

Yeah, any damage woudl have been done! I did contemplate stacking more snow on it as a protective blanket though

Get a cheap electric blanket laid over the engine with the bonnet closed-but not fully? Could line the underside of the bonnet with foil aswell to reflect the heat back down into to the engine bay.....
