Today (Monday) is a public holiday and the boss took Friday off too so I've had a nice loooong weekend :D On Saturday my nice weekend changed from "nice" to "this really grinds my gears" - car trouble.
I was about 30km from home when my gearbox decided to just stop working, not even a warning or little scream to say it was dying! Luckily it didn't leave me totally stranded needing a tow home, it left me with just 4th gear so I managed to limp the car back to my mates place about 5km from where the gearbox died. Now I'm driving my mates wifes Toyota Ist (if anyone sniggers at that, I swear I'll ban them... not typically a car I'd be seen dead in haha).

Well, that wasn't much of a rant... but I'm done :D

Now the facts so I can maybe get opinions on what exactly has failed... mainly because there is a good chance this box will get rebuilt - before this problem it shifted really smoothly and is tight between gears. As abundant as 20DET boxes are, it's going to be hard to find one as smooth and tight as the one I've got. Buying 2nd hand basically means no guarantees on a box with unknown kms in an unknown condition.
Since I bought my R32 about 4ish years ago, there has been a very audible (what I assume is) bearing noise. It's a whining/grinding noise. This noise goes away when the clutch is pushed (please, PLEASE do not tell me it's the release bearing, it is not!) - with that I've been told it could be the input shaft or rear bearing or both. On Saturday there was a repeated and rapid loss/gain in drive to the rear wheels, within 1 min I pulled down a side street to visually inspect the gearbox, diff etc. Got back in and drove off... within another minute I had completely lost drive in all gears including reverse except 4th gear. I now have 5 neutral gears and 1 forward gear lol. There were literally no warning signs except the noise it's made for years... it literally just stopped working and self destructed in silence.
So... anyone have a clue what may have failed within the box for me to keep just 1 gear? Do you reckon it's repairable or will it look like a bomb has gone off in the box?

Bomb has gone off in the box bud. Complete strip and rebuild I am afraid. If u have lost all gears except for 4th I suspect that the syncros have given up as well as the input shaft bearing.

Would it not be benificial to you to fit a rb25det box??

But shouldn't there be a bomb type sound if a bomb has gone off? Apart from an obvious mechanical sound when I was losing/gaining drive, there was absolutely no sound from its death! I've heard what a box sounds like after turning 3rd into neutral in a few seconds (thanks to an RB30DET haha) and I've heard what pieces of a gear sound like rattling around in a gearbox (again, thanks to the same RB30 :D) for months... nothing like that happened. Besides, I hadn't even used some of the gears that now no longer work (reverse, 5th and only briefly used 3rd)

Yeah I have considered a 25DET box but they're not a straight fit, I never plan to take the power to 20DET box killing levels lol and a 25DET box costs 3-4x what a 20DET box costs. With how common Skylines are here the strongest rwd RB gearbox fetches a premium price and I just can't justify the need or cost or hassle to make it fit. The good news is, a mate of mine owns his own tyre shop and he's a qualified mechanic so I'll be popping in and seeing him tomorrow :) Pretty much the only reason I'm considering rebuilding mine so hopefully he can give me some good news on pricing!

Haha not quite... do you know what an Ist looks like? It's only half of a Toyota :dogpile:
I guess that's fair though... "ist" is only half of a word so it makes sense to get half a car! They're small, automatic and 1.3ltrs of pure fury :gay:

haha sadly I drive the total opposite way, maybe why it lasted so long making that noise. My rear tyres last as long as an n/a Skyline drivers :grinno:

just because there was no noise does not mean that the box is finshed. I know that you can get a solid nismo kit for it which is not as expensive as you think. I believe ADAM-MURSE is selling on cheap and it might be worth a price on posatge cheaper than a rebuild as the parts for the RB25 box are really expensive.

So what gears have you lost??

It's a daily driver car (although rarely used) so I don't need to fork out for fancier Nismo bits etc..... I just want a functioning, smooth RB20DET gearbox lol
I've lost every gear including reverse.... except 4th.

The nismo parts are generally not that expensive. You just need to look carefully.

Rebuild defo then. Will be like new. Syncros have dropped.
