Managed to confuse my auto this morning and the A/T light came on - then I realised I was in limp home mode, because it was staying in one gear and was ignoring the selector.

Luckily when I got to work, after turning off the ignition it was OK, although it did flash initially. After about 8 flashes the light went out - I drove around the car park and all was well.

What did I do wrong ? Will it happen again?

Limp Home mode? Is that for if you have a blow out or your exhaust falls off or something? Never heard of that before. Hope it doesn't happen to you again Grinder.

Yeah I figured that mate. Just that I've had two autos before and never encountered anything like this. Is it something specifically on the R34 GTT auto?

Yeah I just got the owners manual the other day. I'll check it tonight - I was panicking this morning in my head I was thinking worst-case scenario new gearbox, but as it was still moving forward I suspected something electronic.

Have a word with R34GTT Boy as he had the same problem when he first had his.

ps It might be worth checking the on GTROC to see if he posted about it on there.

If the car was stuck in a particular gear, then one of you speed sensors have gone. Its happened to a GGT a mate of mine has.
The car is not registerin the speed correctly, and it stays stuck in third.

This is similar to what R34GTT Boy says.

2 days on and it hasn't happened again yet. I'm hopeful this was a one-off.

Would it happen to a normal auto, or just one like the Skyline with the electronic sequential mode ? In other words if it gets worse and happens again, should I take it to a Skyline specialist or an automatic gearbox specialist ?

Grinder, I had a similar problem with my auto, (without the triptronic) stuck in 3rd gear, but it got worse, and the 'clutch' wouldnt disengage at all... I ended up with a new gearbox... your looking at at least a grand for that... :( mersea, is the ONLY auto gearbox place in the east of england!!!! (and belive me, i looked!!!)

my problem was a little different... stuck in 3rd, meant that i couldnt stop without stalling, but if the car was rolling, i could travel almost as fast as i wanted!!

Matt I am laughing at your last paragraph but crying at the first :D :( Plus maybe the GTT with tiptronic would be more expensive. Of course I could convert to manual ! (presumably)

Got any contact details of mersea? There is an autobox place in Southend, but I've no idea if they're any good.

There is A&M Gearbox Service in Chelmsford who have done some jobs for me in the past. It might be worth giving them a ring and asking if they have any experience of the Skyline tiptronic gearbox.

If you want, PM me and I will dig out their number tomorrow.

Thanks Bubble. I'll keep them in mind - I'm still interested to receive opinion on this, but I'm not going to worry until it happens again

Hi Grin

I dont want to be a downer but it probably will happen again, I thought as you did but it got worse over time as i suppose the sensor deteriorated. Quick smart I got it fixed.

I was told the sensor cost a few quid from Japan but the skill is in fitting the darn thing, why dont you have a word with Abbey or Gary they might be able to get a sensor from JP and then its a labor payment to slip the blighter in. Also you know that you are in safe Skyline hands, I could think of nothing worse than trusting a non-standard uk car to a local autobox shop that was not sure.

I agree Andy, better to go somewhere trusted than somewhere unknown. But I'm still doing nothing until it gets worse!

Plus what about that idea of converting to manual - wonder what that would involve. Hmmm - worth thinking about, but I don't know if I could cope with the traffic I've had recently in a manual jobbie.
