Ok, long story but here goes :)

Since owning my R33 GTR V-spec, after a while I noticed a strange rattling noise only at certain rpms, <around 3k> not very loud but got slightly worse as time went on, many people suspected worn big ends so I had it booked in with a known Skyline specialist for a potential engine rebuild.
When the car went in, everything was fine, it made full boost it was kicking out 340BHP with a good torque figure only issue was a rattle from the engine.
It was at the garage for around 6 weeks before they started doing the work due to current workshop commitments etc but eventually they stripped the engine and discovered the big end bearings on number 3 were in bits :apuke:
by some kind of miracle the crank/pistons/bores were perfect, no damage at all.. conrods were inspected and they were all fine. In went a set of uprated bearings and the engine was put back together. Went to collect on Saturday my friend gave me a lift up, we collected the car, after about 30 mins very careful driving sticking to no higher than 2.5Krpm I came to a roundabout and though i'd try a tiny bit of boost only to 3.5k, however all I get is no boost and a strange air-raid siren noise coming from the bottom left quarter of the bonnet and the boost guage went to 0 and no higher, the oil pressures and engine temp were fine but my oil temperature guage was not working. I rang the garage and said I had problems and wasn't boosting, they said they knew it had boost when it went in, and asked me to bring it back straight away so I did.
When we got there the mechanic fixed my oil temp guage which wasn't connected.. checked all the hoses and couldn't find a leak, we spent ages taking the induction box off, checking the turbos and could see the compressor wheels spinning on ignition. I did remind the Mechanic and their admin/phone guy that it did have boost when it went in, they both agreed and said it was boosting when they test drove it after the rebuild.. their best suggestion was to leave it with them and let them take the bumper off to check intercooler hoses/dump valves on monday. 230 miles driven, day wasted no car, I wasn't impressed but understood it needed some more time. :crazy:
I get a phone call on tuesday saying the intercooler is fine, but the rear turbo exhaust wheel has lost 2 blades and every other blade is damaged :wtf: as a result pressure from the first working turbo was stalling the 2nd one and going back up the airbox, hence the strange noise..
When I start asking questions about putting the car right the guy on the phone denies he said it had boost when it went in, <me and my friend both heard him say it did have> I was expecting them to replace the turbo and sort the car out free of charge as when it went in the turbos were fine and right after it leaves the garage one of them has blown. They argue they havn't touched the turbos in the rebuild and i've either caned it after picking it up or its a coincidence... he then proceeds to tell me "he's losing his temper with me" I put things into perspective by saying "erm,, i've paid £££ for a rebuild, not had my car for 8 weeks, drove 230 miles on saturday for nothing... and your losing your temper with ME?" :bs2:
He slams the phone down.
When I call back to say I want something sorting out or im gonna name-shame/trading standards/etc he slams the phone down again.
I call back an hour later to give them one last chance, and he agrees for me to speak to their mechanic.
Eventually this happens and after some argument and there being no physical evidence or way I can prove they've done something they agree to give me a recon turbo, they quoted me £589 and 10 hours labour to fit it, bolloks to that.
I went along yesterday and collected the car, filthy dirty. Collected the turbo which seems fine right amount of play in the shaft etc.. Drove home and everything was fine apart from a squeally fan belt when starting from cold <I made them double check that> They've disconnected the wastegate on the first turbo to prevent it spooling and causing any more damage until I get my spare fitted.
When I get home I notice there is a bolt missing from my front splitter which has come undone on the way home, <quick fix I know> a reasonable dent in the bottom of the passenger door <you can tell its just been done because its grey where the scratch is, not a stone chip as its a proper dent and right in the side of the door at the bottom>
I'm happy with the rebuild as the engine runs real smooth and alot quieter but im not happy with job on the whole.
A guy I work with is an expert with turbos, he runs to Lancia integrale's in rallies, he rekons they;ve maybe dropped something into the manifold which has caused it, as 2 blades are missing and when a ceramic turbo goes usually the exhaust wheel goes completley and under full boost, although im not an expert.
All i'm wondering is have I been pretty much done over? I refuse to believe that i've damaged the turbos as I never went over 2.5Krpm until I tried boost when there was nothing, no boost not even for a second, no noises no smoke as my friend was following me. And I do not believe its a coincidence as when the car went in, it was boosting fine not a single issue with turbos. Their mechanic says one reason it could have done it would be det, but there are no signs of det in my engine and its definitley not detting now.
I'm real glad to have the car back as I love it to bits however i'm pretty miffed.. The garage also gave me a coil pack as one of mine was starting to be intermittent, but I realise this is very small compensation.
Any thoughts on the situation?

Go back to the garage at 1am with two large jerry cans full of petrol...one box of matches and have some fun. I find goats blood smeared all over the walls and floor spelling out differents threats normally works as well. No help to your car i know, but teach those lying bitches a lesson. :devil:

I know its a bast4rd, but I refuse to belive that the turbos have just "gone" under no boost whatsoever, imo the fact that they've given me a free turbo kinda shows they've admitted guilt but on the other hand i'd rather just get it out of there,

No winners there then and very little proof either way, a very tough call for both you and the garage.
That is one of the reasons I decided to re-build my own, I know who's fault it is if it goes wrong...
If they had fitted re-con, or new turbo's I'd agree with the first reply, but as it is, well I would have to say if it is all external, ie no 'bits' went through the engine, you have to take it on the chin, could just be plain old bad luck, but it could be so much worse....
I feel sorry for you, but these things do happen...

As a sensible suggestion, i would consider writing a letter to the garage, asking them to outline everything they claim to have done, get receipts and any correspondence you've had with the garage and explain that you will be seeking legal advice. Go to the CAB - they will advise you where you stand legally - and then you could take it from there. Companies only really start listening when the words "legal advice" and "court" start being used. :boxing:

Doesn't sound entirely right to me.

Really difficult though fella, freak failures like this can happen, it is just highly, highly unlikely - especially with the failure you have had now that you have opened it up.

I would have hoped for a at least a free fitting offer or something along those lines on some new turbos and see it as a futher opportunity to upgrade and use that new engine strength of yours.

They did give me a turbo to replace the broken one, but wouldn't fit it for me, i've found someone locally who can do it. Its still not the point though :crazy:

Gutted for you - and also a very difficult situation for you. I think its going to be difficult to prove either way about your cream crackered turbo. Id take what ever you can get free from the garage (who is it by the way?). At least in the long run - you have a sweet engine - and a sweet turbo (albeit 1)......a bitter pill to swallow I know.

I think if nothing comes of the letter writing or legal business, that you should name and shame them here of all places, their key demo.

Yeah I know its difficult... the garage have said if it was anything they could have pinpointed as being them they would have fixed it.. but I refuse to belive that turbo just went right after me picking it up.
The engine is running sweet as <touch wood> im happy with the engine i've done 220 miles since collecting and theres been no sillyness..
Just glad to have her back in my hands...

Feel bad for you mate, had same thing happen to me here in ireland, so be thankful you got it outta there and can get it soted. Grin and bear it m8, mine ended costing me ,towing, intercooler piping redone, turbo etc.. etc.., 900squids in all :(.

Best of luck getting it sorted

Yeah i do feel sorry for you mate, i can't really offer any advice that hasn't already been given.

I just feel its a shame that as owners of cars such as skylines that we all seem to get shafted when it comes to garages, parts, labour, etc.

I for one steer clear of these 'skyline specialists' because of my knowledge of the general motortrade (what i've see first hand mainly). I'm mean 6 weeks to start the job, thats disgusting in its own right!

Sorry to learn of your problems. I think you are just gonna need to get over this one though. I dont see anyway that you can know whether this was something that happened whilst at the garage or whether it was purely coincidental/shite luck timing.

I realise that is easy for me to say when i am not in your shoes.

ISJ, i agree mate so many stories of getting shafted by the big boys, aint good! Only ones who really get looked after 100% are those that spend tens of thousands! :crazy:

from your description it does sound like foreign object damage to the turbo tho - its gotta be a reasonable bet that there was a nut/washer in the manifold when it was reassembled that has gone through the turbo

i would be livid

Due to the fact of me having such a bad experience, not just the Turbo blowing but when I got in, the bottom of my door is dented and theres a nut missing off my front splitter leaving it hanging off, plus the fact oil temp guage wasn't working when I drove off first time I do feel like I should name and shame, we all own very expensive cars most of us take them as our pride and joy and when we have a bad experience I think its a good thing we share it so we look after each others investments.
On the other hand I will not publically name and shame because they have sorted me with a turbo and I do not want to be involved in any slanging matches, also coupled with the fact the engine itself is running fine.
For this reason those of you who wish to know please PM me and I will tell you the garage involved.

Sorry to hear you troubles

That's the thing with "specialist" garages here in the UK , you really dont have a leg to stand on...

It's really is in the best interest of a tuner to correct their own mistakes, as their reputation is at stake, and as they are already a number of specialists, it's not like they couldn't lose business, it's not like we all drive Ford's, their is a limited market. You really can't afford to be doing bad things within a limited market, you might aswell say 'ta ta' now!
