what you cant pick up in that video is just how 'low down' the knock sounded - it clearly sounded like it was coming from the bowels of the car

in your vid it sounds very much like its up in the top end so i'd guess lazy lifters

have you checked exhaust manifold too just to see if there's any blowing?

I've looked and can't see anything wrong at all, it definitely sounds like it's coming from the top but when you walk around the sound is hard to find exactly where it's coming from, but I would say top

a good little purchase is a vehicle stethoscope - looks just like a normal stetho but instead of that horrible cold thing they stick on your back it has a metal bar - you can go around the engine and check out if it is or not but it sounds very much top end.

thing is when i had a lazy lifter i'd get some tapping like what you have.. especially from cold start.. however after a minute or two oil would get around and it'd be fine.

I'd definitely check your timing - if its out you can get this tapping

does the car feel laggy on boost or super punchy all of a sudden?

-check the timing first

-then pop the rocker covers off and have a look for anything that could be bent.. or possibly sat in there... i've found a half moon gasket under my cams in the past after the last clown that did some work on it for me said i had one missing.

-another thing to look at is your timing belt - if the tensioner is loose it can throw the engine timing out

your in NW area right?

have you changed the oil viscosity ?
i had something like this on a mazda when i switched to magnatec, tappets sounded like a diesel dropped the oil/filter and used some thicker stuff problem sorted

yeah i was reading in one of those threads i linked to some of the cars give the lazy tappet sound on 5w40 so ppl switch to a 10/50 instead

as i say tho i wouldn't just assume the oil is the culprit - i'd definitely go about checking the engine timing with a gun, the exhaust manifold gasket (just incase).. pull the rocker covers to ensure nowt is bent and finall the tensioner pulley and/or the cambelt - just to ensure none of that is super slack or loose. at least then you'll have peace of mind.

when my timing slipped massively i had this same sound it wasn't nice.

All my pullys and belts seem fine none are lose, I did have a oil change about two week ago they put in 10w40 full synthetic, the timing seems Ok the car never runs on or when in gear move without me doing anything, ref the rocker cover I will give that a look, {not 100% sure of what to do } but can't be that hard to remove, will keep you posted on what I find if anything, and I'm going to try and find one of them.doctor things lol

I think some peaple have missed the bigger knock and that was the one that I heard on the very first start which would indicate to me something very serious in the bottom of the engine however a video can't really help especially when u are holding it to start the car then walking round.
