What colour wires have you got, one red and one black?

it normally has + and - on the pump , which one did you take of the live side?

no the wires ive got one red and one red with a strip on it and there was no marking on the old pump!

I'm looking at a pump and the positive has a plain red wire, the negative has a red/black stripe.
If that's no help, you can check with a multi meter or even a 12V lamp against the chassis (negative) to identify which of yours is positive. You'll need assistance with someone on the ign. key, as the ecu will time out the 12V+ after about 5 seconds.
