Hi there. i was sitting in traffic today and the temperature guage on my car went up above half way. it didnt go near the ''H'' or actually boil. i dont have the car to long but the previous owner put a steel headgasket on it.

On one of the receipts from the previous company that serviced it has a note saying ''Viscous Fan needs attention''. could this be my problem?
how do i know if my Fan is working properly?

as i said the car didnt actually go into the Red!

please help Fellas!

yeah on or off only joking

Sound like the viscous coupling (as said). Its filled with sillicone and lots of little plates the faster it spins the hotter it gets and the silicone becomes soild thus turning the fan at the required amount to match engine speed. I think

If the fluid inside has leaked out then your fan aint working proberly

What did the oil temp go to?
just rose above half, as i said it didnt actually into the white mark befoe the ''H''. it happened again this morning in town. its 27deg here which might have a bearing on it!
while it happened i lifted the bonnet and the fan didnt seem to be going any faster!

Its still happening! my friend brought around his gtr today and the fans seem to be moving at the same speed!

the car doesnt boil but temp goes up. its fine when im driving but when i stop it seems to climb a little sometimes!

im going to try to flush out the Rad tomorrow.
is there any special technique in refilling the system to eliminate air locks?

any more ideas lads??

Just top it up and pump the pipes to get air out, then run with cap off and top up. Turn off car let settle top up again and then run car with heaters on in the car on HOT as long as the air is hot air lock avoided!! Check again after running and top up ;)

But to be honest sounds like the fan and would be hard to see if your fan is working harder than your mates!! Is there any play in the fan back to front??? If so the bearings have gone and that'll be your reason!

Could be a thermostat issue as well, worth changing anyway if not done, they're cheap and easy to do.

Thermostat is easy to check, run the car up til its warm both hoses should be nearly the same temperture if ones hot and ones cold thermostat faulty ;)

if it only happens when you are moving slowly like in traffic its your viscous fan,if it happens when driving hard and fast then your radiator is probably blocked and needs to be replacing,no amount of flushing is any good. but in your case i believe its the fan
