they are a good upgrade for the 33 gtst
Humm not too sure about that, only if you can get them dirty cheap I think. The couple i've seen so far are over half the price of a secondhand FMIC....

Cheers for the info folks....

Hi!

I think I can contribute to this since I've installed one on my S2.

The R34 SMIC is noticeably larger compared to the R33 one.
The effort involved mounting the R34 unit is comparable to a FMIC installation.

However the R34 unit is a plug in replacement and does fit in a 96%
so no drilling involved.

I don't know about any power gains, but the car was more fun to drive afterwards.

After I installed my boost controller and upped the boost to nearly 1 bar, the R34 SMIC really did a good job in cooling things down.

Here's my original post:

Torques, cracking write up m8. Really good article for the forum.

TBH the only reservation I have is the cost. The ones i've seen so far are costly compaired to a price (& performance gained) from a FMIC.

I'm thinking nice interim solution if I can source one cheaply....

Hi there,

Thanks for the kudos :)

I think it depends on the price for the SMIC.
I don't know what people are asking for the part, but if the unit is in good nick I'd say it's worth 30-40 quid.

I for my part paid around 40 and it was almost a new unit.

If you're just into milder tuning (or as an interim add-on) the SMIC definitely is worth it.

I heard that a used GTR FMIC is relatively easy to mount, but you need a piping-kit to fit it (I think)

Besides with the SMIC there is lesser lag and so the engine feels quite responsive.

I like my SMIC, I think it's effective and if you compare the size you know why :)

Cheers,

Andrew

Get an R32 or R33 GTR FMIC for approx £80 and a Japspeed piping kit approx £130 and there you go! Best thing to do IMO

Sorry about my comment then :)

But honestly, I think it depends on:
  1. Can get a good priced SMIC?
  2. What your tuning ambitions are?
  3. Whether you like the strange piping of the FMIC ;)

I think with the standard turbo it's not really worth it, but if you're planning an upgrade probably the FMIC is worth the choice.

I can not really comment on the added lag, but I heard that it is noticeable.
After all the GTR as 2 turbo chargers so they fill up the inter-cooler and pipe volume quicker.

The GTST with the standard turbo obviously needs a bit more time to fill up the volume till the boost comes on.

I can report from the R34SMIC that the engine remains very responsive.
In fact I have lots of low end torque without any hesitation.
:)

I think there is a FMIC from JapSpeed that uses part of the standard piping.

But it's quite pricey ...

Check here for what the FMIC gains with standard setup ->

Yes you're evil ;) What is the max BHP of the R34 SMIC?

Tuning wise I'm aiming for 350BHP, not sure if this is outside the R34 SMIC range (or it would be restrictive is left....)
