You may have noticed those new electronic signs on the M4. They were switched on by a transport minister on Tuesday. Now the bad news, they are rigged with the SPECS speed cameras.

SPECS is a camera based system. As you go past a camera software detects and reads your number plate. When you go past the next camera, it detects and reads your number plate again. It knows how far apart the cameras are so it can work out your average speed between the two Cameras.

The system is fully automatic and will issue a ticket itself. It does this for every single vehicle that speeds passes a camera! You will not know you've been done as the cameras don't flash. There's no film in them either, they're digital. Images of you in your car, together with the date and time are stored on disc (I assume they only keep them if you've been caught).

It works 24/7, 365 days a year, and theoretically, there's absolutely no limit on the number of tickets that it can issue. The whole section of the M4 between Theale (J12) and Membury Services (between 14 and 15) is wired, both ways. It is believed that the system is set to trigger a ticket at 78 mph.

Bugger..!

Specs again

I got this

M4 SPECS Hoax

Speed Check has received a number of enquiries over the past week in relation to a hoax email. It has been implied that a SPECS system has been installed on the M4. Speed Check would like to assure all interested parties that there are currently no SPECS systems in place on the M4.

The Highways Agency installed new signs between J 12 and J 14 of the M4, Berkshire on the 8th October 2003. These give clearer information about road conditions to drivers. The signs have two CCTV cameras. One which monitors the sign itself to make sure its working and displaying the right message; and another to monitor the congestion to evaluate the effect the sign is having on the traffic.

There are no SPECS cameras connected to these signs.

Thames Valley Police change the messages on the signs according to the conditions to give up-to-date information to the motorists. This is done via their control room.

For detailed information about the project please go to the Highways Agency website.

Just take your number plates off, or put on fake ones. The punishment is cheaper :D
