Hi all just wondered if anybody could help, ive got a 1992 r32 gtr and havin a slight problem, the car runs fine and boosts fully but when i let off i get a white smoke from the exhaust then a second or two later it stops and only happens on full boost,a friend told me is probrably a seal on the turbo thats gone just thought id get a second opinion cheers craig
Please don't get alarmed but white smoke is not normally oil related see below.
White smoke normally means it is burning/evaporating water common cause head gasket, cracked head etc.
Grey/Blue smoke = oil common causes cracked pistons around oil control rings, worn engine, worn valve seals, worn turbo etc.
Black = fuel common cause over fueling
I would have someone follow you just to be sure what colour the smoke is & investigate from there.
Over fueling on overrun is not really a problem & a puff of blue smoke isn't really to bad either considering the age of the engine but if the head gasket is on the way out then I would be a little concerned & be planing to get it done asap.
Early signs of head gasket failure will usually show up as contamination/sludge in the rocker cover & breather system as well as the rad & expansion tank.
Worn or damaged engine/pistons would normally make the car breath heavily from the oil filler in other words you would have a fair bit of air escaping from the oil filler hole if you took it off with the engine running.
Blue smoke from worn valve stems & seals normally show up either at initial startup or on overrun.
Worn turbo/turbo's normally blue smokes on boost & leave lots of oil in the intake pipe work.
