Hey guys I bought a skyline in August and 2 weeks later the pistons failed!! Took it to a garage on the 19th August and 10weeks later I should get it back tomorrow. The owner of the garage has said he will reduce the price because iv had the wait Soo long but I'm not sure what I should ask for in way of discount. He also said right back in agust it would be around 800for Labour but will do the work in and around other jobs to reduce my Labour cost. So firstly does 800 sound average for changing 6pistons and everything else needed to fit the engine back together and I would guess at least 2 or more hours are off due to him doing the work in between jobs plus this discount what should I be looking at paying. Thanks for your advice.

Wen you say failed pistons do you mean ring lands due to det? if so I would say thats a very good price as the engine would have had to come out and be striped for a re-bore and new pistons and rings etc.

So the pistons were ****ed. His words. I didn't need a rebore but the rest correct it was an engine out replace pistons and clean everything up and replace.

Seems a bit daft not to re-bore if the engine had to come out, especially if the piston where fooked, if he just bunged in a set of SH pistons without new rings then I think its a bit much.

800 in labour? seems ok however how much in total with the parts? and did he even hone the bores??? if he said it didnt need a re-bore then he NEEDED to hone it with brand new rings on the pistons.if not then i expect the engine to be getting pulled again very soon

so tell us exactly what has been done

The block was fine so no need to bore it. It was all checked before .parts all in was around 1350 that's with forged pistons and a Ali radiator to replace the old one. He said he needs to clean all the valves and put new rings in ect. He is a Japanese specialist and has worked on my friends skyline for 8years . Price also includes spark plugs liquids head gasket rocker cover gasket and a few other bits and Bob's.

I'm 90% sure I remember him saying something about honing them but also said the block was in very good condition.Yeah I bought the postons from conceptua directly but even before he said they all come together. I'm very confident he knows what he's doing as has worked on many aristos 300zx skylines ect and is highly regarded in my area. My real question tbh guys is if he says all of the above have been done and says would of been say 800 Labour what's responsible for me to ask for as a discount.

Thanks for your help so far.

If you had provided the full information to start with we wouldn't have to to and fro with all the relevant questions, its like pulling teeth!
you made it sound like you thought it was expensive and he wasn't dong a proper job, however now you have finally revealed that he has dome the work to a reasonable standard (although I still think we don't have the whole picture) I think the price is OK!

And how much disscount would you be happy to accept after waiting 10weeks for it? 200? Making the total cost 600ish?

NB - The bores in the block are ok on tolerances they still must be honed if new pistons and rings being fitted - ensure that this has been done. Good luck.

To be honest I think you should be more then happy with the price after all the guy was doing it in his own time out of work to keep costs down so obviously it was gonna take a while
