Slight update to keep this thread from dying :p

With my parents going overseas, it was the perfect time to relocate the car from the backyard into the garage where it now lives; dry and away from the elements.

Dragged it out to do some work to it on the interior; needed to re-fit rear seat and door trims + refit and rewire front speakers/tweeters and replace door cards

^ back in the garage for another sunny day.

Last weekend while weather was sunny and 27 degrees C, I decided to give the car a much needed clean and detail...so car was clay bar'd, washed, polished, waxed, everything cleaned down to the door hinges and the door jambs. Interior also copped a full detail too!

^ replaced all the lights inside on the doors and dashboard

The car itself is blowing an alarming amount of smoke, misfiring and running rich. Blown piston rings and valve stem seals from the head off the parts car. Luckily a friend of mine has a spare RB30E motor so in the next few weeks car will be going to my friends house to go and get the motors swapped and then it's time for the car to get registered!

love this... it's great to see something totally different! old skooool

Time for a small update with lots of photos..

Had a bit of time to tinker and diagnose the car; really did not feel like swapping motors; came to the conclusion that quite possibly the fuel injector for cylinder no.1 is either leaking or stuck open as the car is only running on 5 cylinders and cylinder 1 spark plug is drowned in fuel.

So with that; fuel rail came out:

Image

Image

Injectors removed to be re-conditioned and tested. Also on the shopping list is a new coolant temperature sensor, fuel pressure regulator and new ignition leads.

Found the car had the incorrect spark plugs; NGK PFR5E iridium plugs were in the car, so promptly swapped those out for the correct NGK BKR6E plugs. Also bought a ~1000km old Distributor with a brand new rotor button; all it needs is a new cap, which is also on the shopping list.

Also did a few little things:

Cruise control vacuum line was unable to be used because it looked like this:

Image

so replaced it:

Image

Dug the spare tyre out of the backyard shed and cleaned it

Image

then started cleaning out the boot/trunk so it could be installed

Image

on top of that; found the fuse puller for the fuse box

Image

Bought a new car jack made for lowered cars

Image

Then over the last week I decided to paint the rocker cover and inlet manifold; wrinkle red and wrinkle black respectively.

Image

Image

Image

Image

and then mocked it up. Still need to hit the lettering with sandpaper:

Image

And then I removed the little Nissan sticker from the bootlid; it was annoying me as it looked out of place, wasn't quite straight and yeah...just cleaned the rear of the car up.

Image

Image

and here she is as she sits at the moment:

Image

That should do for now :p I'll next update once the injectors and assosciated parts are installed...fingers crossed it all works!

This is looking great mate, lovely read from start to end and nice to follow the progress! Love the r30 shape. Such a great shame that we didn't get them in the UK and they are rare as rocking horse poop to find and import!

Love the crackle paint too, let me know how that goes as I'd love to do mine but worried if I do a DIY job after a while it will just crack and fall off

Thanks for all the nice words people! Really gives me the motivation to keep working on the car :D

Did some painting today, painted up the fuel rail so it's all ready for new fuel injectors.

Image

Image

Then mocked it up to get an idea of what the motor would look like once it was assembled:

Image

Image

Also; a lucky find on eBay; owners manual for the car :D

Image

And then, closed the bonnet on the car for the first time in 2-3 months and realised the car is much better looking than I remember it being haha

ok, updates!

Finally, brand new OEM fuel injectors arrived as well as OEM fuel pressure regulator.

Comparison of old and new:

Image

And before I had a chance to fit them, I went on an interstate roadtrip to pick this beauty up;
my mate who I bought my R31 off bought this as his new car. Same as mine albeit with an RB30E+t (the '+t' denotes aftermarket turbocharger) and a respray in Audi Aurora pearl something or other.

Image

Then after returning, I ended up buying this thing from a friend of a friend; absolute bargain of the century. R33 series 1 GTS25t manual. I was tempted to strip it and retain front brakes, gearbox and RB25DET for my R31 but decided it was too clean to strip so I cleaned it up some more and on sold it for a tidy little profit.

Image

So in 2 days I have a day off work and i'll be putting the old girl back together again. Fingers crossed all goes well!

and SHE RUNS!

Finished work at 12pm today so decided to spend the rest of the day working on the R31.

Bottom half of the inlet manifold came off, painted same wrinkle black as the top half of the manifold then re-fitted with new gaskets and new coolant temperature sensor.

old coolant temp. sensor:

new coolant temp. sensor

Image

Then it was just a case of replacing everything else and putting the car back together. Basic rundown of work performed: manifold removed, painted, re-fitted. New coolant temperature sensor, new fuel pressure regulator, new fuel injectors, new distributor with new CAS, rotor button and cap + new ignition leads.

injectors on rail:

The finished product:

and then drove it outside for a good wash.

Image

All thats needed now is to fill the car up with a fresh batch of premium unleaded 98 fuel and take it for a really good drive just to get everything moving again. But yeah, really happy the car is finally sorted!

Now for the next hurdle; registration -_-

ok...so I took it for a decent drive, and the verdict was not good. So much smoke, it was even worse than when I started...think it's got a crack in the block or it's done it's rings...either way, replacement RB30e's are cheap as chips down here so next up is an engine swap...

But in terms of updates; fitted a stainless steel engine bay bolt kit that a guy on the R31 skyline club did a group buy on:

Image

Image

Also, Tomei gear knob and blue suede shifter boot from the grey R31 we picked up a month or two ago:

Image

And then I moved it into the backyard because i'll be buying a new daily driver soon and want it kept undercover. But I put a cover over it thats both waterproof and breathable:

Image

Image

And just for fun, spontaneous eBay purchase :p looks kinda cool on it hahaha

Image

You'll also notice the new badge on the grille...rare!

Wow cool read matey, I'm from South Africa and we had lots of these, remember falling in love with skylines the first time one of those were advertised on tv. Great job on the car keep it up, you brought back a lot of memories.

old skool lve it
Thanks!

Ahh yes, the south african R31's. What spec level was the R31 that you had? I have spoken to a guy on the r31 skyline club forums who is from south africa who has a 3.0SGLi. It seems the SA R31's were a little better equipped than the australian ones haha.

And a quick update for today...just picked this up...

Image

It's about to get new water pump, timing belt + tensioner, thermostat as well as the previous brand new injectors, fuel pressure regulator, distrubutor and stuff that I recently fitted to the old motor :D

also got these delivered the other day...

Image

JDM HR31 front struts...were purchased as a 'complete set' however it looks like something is missing :p
The inserts themselves are pretty well f*****. These will be used for my "u-weld" coilover install when I get round to buying them.

The main reason for using HR31 struts is that they are a floating hub arrangement and have 100mm caliper bolt spacing meaning I can fit the R33 GTS25t 4 pot brakes that I have also recently bought :D

Fun times ahead!

Updates.

Worked on the motor over the past couple days

Image

Image

Brand new water pump and timing belt + tensioner fitted (genuine Nissan items)

Image

Pulled the manifold off the car so that I could strip it down, remove injectors, fuel pressure regulator etc. to swap onto the new motor

Image

Image

Happy I did pull it off because I found a pool of water sitting in inlet no.1, which explains my cars ability to pour out a lot of smoke.

Image

And lastly, the new motor as it currently sits:

Update time!

Ripped the old motor out of the car over the weekend. Found out it was missing a few bolts on the bellhousing, missing a bolt on the pressure plate AND only had one bolt holding the starter motor in place (and it was fingertight at best).

Plans now include sourcing the aforementioned bolts + degreasing and cleaning up the engine bay, fixing some issues with the engine bay looms, replacing steering rack bushes as well as steering column bush and then the new motor can be dropped in.

Image

Here is the new motor all ready to be bolted into the car :D

Anyway, i'll update again once the new motor is in. For now; some pics from the weekend. Enjoy!
