Fuel consumption & ECU reset

Hi everyone,

I have an R33 GTS25T, I've no idea what tuning work has been done to it besides the visibly obvious mesh air filter and stainless exhaust. It's using a scarey amount of petrol, I'm running super unleaded and it used three quarters of a tank in around 150 miles :wtf: It's also leaving black sooty marks on anything it's left running near, like my garage back wall. I've reset the ECU a bunch of times, in fact the battery was DEAD flat when I picked it up from Southampton anyway so that should have done the trick. I drove it back to Devon, & i reckon that drive should have been enough to remap itself, but it's still guzzling away like Oliver Reed at happy hour. Can anyone suggest anything? Could it possibly be running a piggy-back ECU that's over-riding the standard settings? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Paul

Every few months I do a check, and filled up to the brim (ÂŁ57 later!) that was 3 weeks ago :(

Got exactly 240 miles.

Thats ÂŁ1 every 4.2 miles!

The way I look at it is like this. You chuck ÂŁ1 in for Out Run, or your latest arcade game, and get 3 mins of fun. For ÂŁ1 we get 4 miles of REAL fun!

Makes me feel better every time I fill up :)

Normally, it takes about a week (normal driving) for a quarter tank. Learning from this forum that the Exhaust Gas Sensor can be a culprit to a lot of things, I bought a new one. Three weeks ago, I installed a new sensor. Sure enough, the mileage significantly went up. Now, it takes about a week and a half for a quarter tank (again, normal driving).

I bought the Three Wire Universal Lambda Sensor (1 Black, 2 Whites, Part Number - 86300, Price - ÂŁ21.60). It comes with a simple instruction.

I also bought a 22mm Lambda Sensor Wrench. Without this tool, you'll have a hard time or may damage the sensor during removal or installation (Part # -FTA901, Price - ÂŁ6.45). Here's the site:

Hmmm, ok. thanks for that peeps. Not quite the answer I was hoping for, obviously, I was hoping for "Oh, you just need to adjust the wotsit by three quarters of a turn & you'll get 30mpg", but it's at least comforting to know mine's not abnormal. I'll probably get it checked out sometime anyways, just to be on the safe side, but I guess if it wasn't running right it would fail the emissions test? Is the black sooty mark on the wall normal too?

cheers,

paul

the black sooty mark will be burnt fuel ... skylines naturally over fuel ... hence sometimes flames out of the exhaust .. this can be a good thing as theorectically you could raise boost to compensate (in my opinion) and you don't get detination

over fueling not a problem (bad on fuel i guess) but under fueling is really bad

i could be completely wrong but that's what i think i know ...

To be honest GTS-T an GTR are not that much differant on fuel usage and yours is normal as is the black sooty back end of the bumper near the exhaust .Dont worry about it .Try taking the car on a longish trip and hardly hitting boost and never go above 65 mph you will be amazed at the differance on the fuel consumption ,floor it the trip back in every gear and the fuel usage will be twice as much and you can nearly see the needle going down :)

yes i have noticed that on almost every heel-toe downshift you can hear the car spitting fire :D nothing comes out the muffler as of yet though since I haven't had a chance to get my downpipe and de-cat pipe fitted onto the car.....can't wait till i do though

back on topic....once I get my exhaust finished and my new SMIC and MBC on the car I'm going to have an SAFCII installed and dyno tuned....i'm hoping to be able to smooth out the a/f ratios at idle so as not to consume AS much fuel when i'm just sitting still.......i swear sometimes I can actually SEE my fuel gauge drop when i'm in traffic :funny:

Daniel

Exactly right matey. Under fuelling is bad anyway but on turbo charged motors it's critical this doesn't happen. Overfuelling slightly won't cause too much damage but you might build up carbon deposits on your valves etc, a little more quicker than normal.

i get between 270 - 300 miles per full tank, but mines mostly school runs, and not all out... the occasional squirt tho... these cars CAN be reasonably good on fuel, if you want them to be..

also mines mapped to be lean at low throttle, which also helps, and is where most of my driving is done..

T

p.s. my cars 340 ath with quite a few mods...

fuel consumption

I only put $20 in at a time,, the more fuel you carry, the more fuel you need to carry it,,,
Over here I have a saying that goes with the territory,, If you drive a V8, then you don't give a F@#^ about fuel economy,, kinda the same for the Skyline I guess,, I didn't buy it to be a daily driver,, It's a toy and I intend to play !!!! lol
